Current President:

Michael Pratte is the K-12 Science Coordinator for Stafford County Public Schools and serves in a combined role of both content supervision and curriculum development. A VSELA member since 2013, Mike has recently served as Vice President of Membership and contributed to various subcommittees over the years including assessment. He has served as both VAST President (during the full virtual year), Vice President, Region III coordinator, and has been the recepient of the VAST Rise Award for Science Supervision. State committee and other related contributions include: PAEMST, 2018 curriculum standards revision, Science advisory committee, Region III ACSE Advancement of Computer Science Education Grant, and the 3rd grade VDOE performance assessment pilot. Always ready to “Dare Mighty Things”, Mike’s career passions include providing meaningful field experiences for all students and stressing the development of career ready science skills as students engage in the science content.


Past President:

Julia Renberg currently serves as the Supervisor of Science and Family Life Education with Prince William County Public Schools.   She graduated from Belarussian State University with B.S. in Biochemistry and began her career in education as a middle school Life Science teacher in Florida.   After relocating to Virginia in 2001, she taught high school Chemistry and Forensic Science, and served as a high school assistant principal and administrative coordinator for the Center of Applied Sciences, Interactive and Information Technology (CASIIT).   Julia was the 2013 PWCS Teach of the Year and a recipient of the Washington Post Agnes Meyer Outstanding Teacher Award.  She earned her M.Ed in Curriculum and Instruction in ESOL from George Mason University and is currently pursing a doctoral degree in Education Leadership with a minor in Special Education.    


Vice President: Programming:  Tammy Stone

Supervisor for Rockingham County Public Schools. Tammy graduated from Bridgewater College with a degree in Chemistry and Math. Later she earned her MS in Life Science with a concentration in Chemistry at the University of Maryland at College Park. Tammy has taught at JMU part-time since 2007 and has 23 years of experience in public education. Tammy is passionate about Place Based Education, environmental literacy, and environmental sustainability. She has been a mentor teacher for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, and taken all of the administrators to the Bay from her division. Tammy, as president, serves on the board of directors of the Shenandoah Valley Pure Water Forum, an environmental organization that brings together businesses, non-profits, universities, and public schools to address water quality issues of the Shenandoah River. Aside from environmental education, she believes that STEM education is vital and values authentic, integrated learning experiences for all students K-12. Furthermore, her goal is to empower and champion the amazing teachers she works with to provide these experiences to their students. Tammy is a member of NSTA, VAST, VMSC, VSCAL, VDOE EE board, ITEEA, and she has been a VSELA member since 2013.



Vice-President for Membership:

Jessica Sarver is the K-12 STEM Coordinator for Orange County Public Schools and has been a VSELA member for six years. In addition to STEM, Jessica's content supervision areas include Science, Computer Science, and Career and Technical Education. Before this position, Jessica served as a classroom teacher for seven years, an Instructional Coach for four years, and has had her current role in Orange for almost seven years. Outside of work, you can probably find Jessica cheering on her teenage son's sports, including family favorites of baseball and hockey.



Treasurer:  Dat Le 

Dat Le is the Science Supervisor for Arlington Public Schools. In this position, he is responsible for the management and coordination of the K-12 science program serving over 27,000 students.  Dat previously taught middle and high school science, including biology and environmental science.  He has also taught graduate courses in research, evaluation, and educational statistics.  In addition to being Treasurer for VSELA, Dat serves on the Board of Directors for the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS).  He is also on the DEI Task Force for the National Science Teaching Association (NSTA).



Secretary:

Lani Patrick is the K-12 Science Instructional Specialist for Campbell County Public Schools. As a champion for STEM education, Lani enthusiastically supports K-12 educators and collaborates with community agencies and higher education to provide students opportunities to solve problems and apply science and engineering practices. Lani serves on the Board of Directors for the Future Focus Foundation (501c3), whose mission is: “To prepare and encourage Central Virginia students in K-12 and beyond to seek careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields and to provide a pipeline for a technically and scientifically proficient workforce.” Lani is a member of NSTA, VAST, VISTE, ISTE, VASCD, ASCD, and she has been a VSELA member since 2014. She is passionate about learning and understands the lifelong impact STEM education has on students!
